Euphemia presents herself as defenseless, elegant, and utterly disarming—a façade she maintains with practiced ease and deliberate intent. Beneath the veneer, however, lies a cold-hearted, calculating woman driven by self-interest and an unrelenting greed for wealth, power, and status.
Though she hides it behind a sweet smile and honeyed words of endearment, Euphemia is emotionally detached. She rarely acts out of compassion and sees people more as tools or opportunities than individuals. Her charm and eloquence are weapons she wields expertly, and she places great faith in her ability to talk—or flirt—her way out of even the direst situations. Her inflated sense of self-worth borders on arrogance, at times leading her to overestimate herself.
Euphemia is acutely aware of her humble beginnings, which she regards with contempt. The idea of returning to a life of hard, thankless labor repulses her. She has grown accustomed to the luxuries of a more refined existence — and she is determined to maintain that lifestyle, no matter the cost. Legal or moral boundaries hold little value when weighed against the promise of profit, and she benefits from the labour and suffering of others with little to no qualms. While Euphemia values and rewards loyalty, it is only insofar as it serves her interests, and betrayal is something she repays with a long and vindictive memory.
The one thing Euphemia values over profit and security is entertainment.
A lover of intrigue, gossip, and games of chance, Euphemia thrives in environments rich with secrets and schemes. When offered the opportunity to play, she is likely to indulge, even if her only gain is amusement at the expense of another’s embarrassment or loss.
History
Euphemia remembers little of her early childhood. Born along the Miran-Cantish border to a poor farming family, she was sold off quite early in her life to earn her parents some much-needed money after a major harvest failed. She was purchased by a man scouting for poor young girls who would fetch a pretty penny with a high-end brothel in Miras to be reared into courtesans, as happened to Euphemia.
Through her adolescence, Euphemia worked as a domestic servant for the establishment, simultaneously being taught in the refined arts of entertainment and seduction. She was instructed not only in pleasing, but also in observing, performing, and manipulating. As the years passed, her looks, talent, and discipline distinguished her. In time, Euphemia became one of the brothel's most sought-after companions, earning both status and many moneyed clients.
Several decades into her tenure, she ensnared the affections of a young nobleman—gullible, wealthy, and entirely smitten. Upon discovering she had accidentally fallen pregnant, Euphemia decided to use the unfortunate circumstances to her advantage and attempt to break out of the golden cage she had grown weary of. Believing her beau would either install her as a secret mistress or pay handsomely to protect his family’s name, she revealed the pregnancy, expecting leverage.
But she had miscalculated. Instead of bribery or discretion, the nobleman responded with sincerity, offering to abandon his inheritance and elope with her, living a modest life together in exile. Euphemia, who had no desire for anything “humble” or “domestic,” cut all contact.
Her departure from the brothel came soon after, though not on her terms. When the establishment discovered her condition, they cast her out, unwilling to support a courtesan who could not work. Homeless and pregnant, Euphemia sought shelter with an old friend—a human woman and former brothel worker who had been dismissed years earlier due to age. This friend, now employed at a local inn, gave Euphemia a place to stay and helped her secure temporary work.
It was during this time that the two women began to plot a future. The friend revealed her dream of opening a business of her own and invited Euphemia to partner with her. Once her child was born, they planned to relocate to Amedra and start anew. Upon bearing a daughter several months later, Euphemia left the infant at her former suitor’s doorstep, unwilling to weigh herself down with a child she had never desired.
With a modest loan and their savings, the two women purchased a small property in Amedra’s harbor district. What began as a burlesque club offering “additional” services quickly flourished. The business became a discreet yet renowned hub for travelers, merchants, and those dealing in delicate information. Euphemia’s human partner eventually succumbed to old age, leaving her the sole mistress of the Siren’s Call to this day.
Current Story
Little has changed for Euphemia and her establishment throughout the years. If anything, wars and cataclysms have brought more business, as the military armed up and people grew desperate for distraction from an unclear future. Aside from a newfound interest in the legal and illegal trading of artefacts from the recently discovered ancient cultural sites, Euphemia has kept to her business of trading information and selling love.
Additional Info
The Siren’s Call is not only a club and a brothel, but also a place for trading peculiar information. It is located inside an anchored ship in a remote corner of Amedra’s harbour.
Security and maintenance staff are subjected to frequent turnover as Euphemia dislikes having people from the ‘outside’ knowing too much of the goings-on ‘inside’ the Siren’s Call.
Euphemia looks after her girls with eagle eyes, but what at first glance could be mistaken for motherly worry is care for the assets that keep her business running.
Euphemia herself has mostly retired to a managing role, rarely ever performing or offering services anymore, unless the client is very exclusive, holds invaluable information, or simply strikes her fancy.
When she does give performances or services, she employs her healing powers as a Troubadour, enhancing the positive impact on the recipient.
Her preferred instruments are the zither, harp, and mandolin, but first of all, her voice.
