Life taught Lily early on that survival was a privilege given only to the strong and that pride meant nothing to the dead. To that end, she feels no shame throwing her weight with the strong, her own sense of pride unhindered by schmoozing up to those with power and influence. If it means a better life for herself, she'll play obedient lapdog for anyone worth the time, likewise switching loyalties at the drop of a hat when someone outlives their usefulness. Though she would never word it as such, Lily is terrified of death and when it is moments when her life is at stake that the cool exterior shatters. She is not above pleading for her own life, whatever it takes. At its extreme she would gladly sacrifice pieces of herself and what little remains precious, and would not hesitate to offer up even her own family for one more day alive. This whole lifestyle has left her particularly perceptive, able to quickly judge people's abilities and potential, as well as finding the quickest route into their favour. It has also made her ironically honest in intentions, her motivations straightforward: as long as someone doesn't slip in power, they will have her loyalty.
Polite, refined, and charming, Lily enjoys the finer things in life. Conversation comes easily and on the surface she seems to enjoy moments spent with company, filling the air with sweet words and laughter. However, more than anyone she understands how quickly allegiances can turn and she maintains no meaningful bonds. So aware is she of the target on her back that she keeps no staff despite a large residence, tending to household matters herself, and eats very little at meals prepared by others. She trusts no one, any desire for true, amicable relationships gated behind paranoia and fear. Deep down Lily knows this sort of life is neither enjoyable nor desirable, but her fear of death overrides all else: a half-empty life is still life.
A flair for the dramatic combined with a sadistic streak has paired well with the Field Marshal's lax reins and Lily delights in leaving a message with every target. Though she avoids grudges, she can't help a particular enjoyment when tasked with assassinating a member of nobility, especially those of Song-Luan descent-- and it is at those times the lease must be tightened else overzealous spite allow for error. She is also not immune to pettiness and the mask will crack when insulted by anyone lacking what she judges the proper will to survive. Largely lacking any sense of morals, the only time Lily shows anything akin to mercy is towards young children, but would let them die at another's hand without batting an eye.
History
Zhao Medicinals was a successful shop of travelling apothecaries and Lily came as the surprise fourth child. A decade younger than her third brother, there was little time for individual attention and her care was shuffled to whoever was free at the moment. Nonetheless, her family loved her and life was comfortable, if a bit lonely, for the young girl.
The family business continued to expand, and over the years began to catch the wrong kind of attention. Lily's father was the sole owner and was soon fielding offers (at best) and threats (more common) to sell and merge with older, more established competitors who weren't happy about being shown up by a first-generation upstart. Zhao Baishao refused every one, taking pride in what he had built. He made his intentions loud and clear: he would never sell the store, not to anyone, not for any price.
Repercussions were swift. The older medicine shops had powerful allies, and what started as employees quitting without warning culminated in raids and accusations of intentional poison until they had lost everything. Out of options, Lily's father and brothers went on the road as travelling salesmen while her mother found employment with a noble family, taking Lily with her. It was a cold, cruel household, and by the time Lily was eight the long hours and frequent beatings proved too much for her mother. With only the same horrible death awaiting her Lily fled, stowing away onto passing carriages and running when discovered, over and over until one day she woke from a feverish sleep to find herself in a dry, comfortable bed. Her benevolent saviours were members of the Eight Flowers, a Song-Luan gang known for highborn clients and victims alike. Among its ranks were actors, singers, and high-class escorts, all carefully trained from childhood to blend into high society on the gang's orders. Lily was likewise molded into one of them and debuted as a charming, refined theatre actress at 16. As with many Eight Flowers she soon found herself a wealthy sponsor who funnelled coin to the gang in exchange for her ridding him of business competitors; the very thing that destroyed her family was now her lifeblood.
When Lily was 19, her sponsor died in a carriage crash with her on board. When she didn't return, the gang assumed that she had perished with him only to discover the truth weeks later. In actuality, Lily had been in the pocket of a prominent city official since her debut. She learned long ago that life belonged to the strong, and survival meant aligning herself with the most powerful. For three years she secretly carried out the official's orders, laying the foundations for the gang's downfall in in a single, firey night; the Eight Flowers had saved her from certain death and she handed them over without a hint of remorse.
With that Lily entered the official's formal employ, engaging in blackmail, espionage, interrogations-- whatever they called for. The more she rose their status the better her life became, and all was well for a while until the official set their sights too high. When Lily was 22, she was told to assassinate a powerful diplomat-- an order that she knew would not end well. With the intention to decide between talking her employer out of their foolish decision or switching sides altogether, Lily slipped into the diplomat's household and got far more than she could've ever bargained for: Field Marshal Tao Yin, in the flesh. Seeing the opportunity of a lifetime Lily allowed herself to be discovered and, after some careful persuasion and the theatrical murder of her former employer, entered into the field marshal's service. It took a few years of closely-monitored small jobs, but Lily has since managed to win the field marshal's favour and is currently her go-to for particularly vengeful tasks.
Current Story
Lily stood at the Field Marshal's side through the tumultuous aftermath of Emperor Artur's death, aiding her goals to put Renata on the throne. One of the first to find out that Prince Sigmund was still alive, she took care of all loose ends before setting out to find him. The search led her to Hangman's Cross where she was thrown into hell, quite literally-- but not without its rewards. In a tremendous stroke of luck, she was able to confirm Sigmund's location and immediately reported back to Tao before returning to the hunt.
It was during this hunt that she was once again thrown into the Circles. She had paid little heed to Dunor's mission her first time around, and for this she paid a steep price. She is now back in Koben under the care of Keisa Seiden, an old friend and the Lord of Eschenfeld as she comes to terms with losing her memories of the past few months.
