Serious | Responsible | Hard-working | Ambitious | Determined | Inflexible | Hard-hearted | Curt | Old-fashioned | Unforgiving
Silvan has always been a stiff and overly serious sort of person. He performs every task with great sobriety and efficiency, and tends to treat his relationships this way as well. Rationality is far more important than sentimentality in his books, and thus he has sharpened the former while leaving the latter as something of a mystery. The result is that he is very stoic, reliable and excellent in work situations, but completely lacking in humour or sociability.
His will is strong and this fuels his ability to work hard, commit and take a firm stance. It similarly makes him inflexible and difficult at compromising. Once he has decided something is the right choice – whether it really is or not – he has a hard time budging from it or giving up, and will instead see it through to success. Sheer determination has often gone a long way for him and, knowing this, he is very driven about his goals. As long as one perseveres and puts forth enough effort, he believes some kind of reward must come.
For all his soberness, he does have a temper. Valuing logic as much as he does, he can grow quickly impatient with anything he views as unreasonable or unrealistic. So used to suppressing his emotions, he has little idea how to handle them when they break from his control and is thus prone to sudden, violent outbursts of anger when frustration gets the better of him. He is never pleased about the hasty decisions he might make while running high on an emotion, but he does have perhaps too much pride and stubbornness to take a decision back once it is out.
History
Silvan was born during a tumultuous time in the palace. Succession politics were at their height and his father Giovan, although the furthest in line out of his siblings, was not immune to them. Wary of foul play, his mother kept him closely by her side in his earliest years. At the age of 3, Giovan was unexpectedly crowned king and Silvan’s life was overtaken by his new position as crown prince. He was raised with the finest tutorship and the importance of his duties was impressed upon him. An obedient and diligent child, Silvan took to his lessons very seriously and excelled.
As he grew older, the arrival of a younger brother and stabilisation of Giovan’s reign saw the pressure on him ease. Still, he continued to be raised very properly by tutors and his parents were often too occupied with politics to see him. They were warm whenever they did find time for him though and Silvan became accustomed to their somewhat distant relationship. Something else he grew used to was a sense of wariness towards others. By necessity, he was quietly taught not to trust the intentions of many who approached him. These precautions did save him from the machinations of several unscrupulous individuals, but it distanced him further from connecting with people.
At 17, he commenced his requisite military training. The humbling routine and years-long post in Valsk finally let him taste some semblance of a normal social life, though it remained an exception in his mind rather than the norm. He returned to the Mirian court as a very fine and dutiful young man. A walk in the palace gardens saw him meet Amarys, the daughter of a Mirian contessa. Despite her highly regarded family and position, she could hardly stand to be in court due to her crippling shyness and would hide in the gardens as much as she could. Thinking it was unfair for her to miss out on the palace’s amenities because of this, Silvan started to bring her drinks, snacks or recent news so she could stay a little in touch with the court. She gradually warmed to his company and he found himself joining her in the gardens simply because he liked it. When he was 24, they married and in the following years had two daughters together.
Current Story
After war descended on the Kingdom, Silvan’s demeanour hardened to deal with the harsher realities. While he believed his father was a good peacetime ruler, he did not find him ideal in a wartime setting. The loss of the north continent was particularly upsetting, as Silvan's training days in Valsk had brought him to respect many people there. Giovan’s unwillingness to wrest the continent back sat badly with Silvan throughout its annexation and he began to really see how his father's pacifistic rule had allowed the Mirian military, and thus their national security, to deterioriate. When he was crowned at age 35, one of Silvan's first endeavours was to restore the military and from there, retake the north. Upon this success, he has continued on his plans to strengthen the Kingdom, neutralise their enemies and ultimately make Miras a peaceful place again.
Unexpected warfronts would continue to rise, however, with Delverne, his own brother, and then the very gods themselves. After much heartfelt convincing and promises from Vinicio, Silvan permitted a temporary truce with the so-called East Miras Kingdom in order to tackle the divine calamities threatening to tear Alva apart; his desire to do well for his Kingdom and family was ultimately greater than his own pride. The collaboration paid off, as questers successfully revived Mareus and Therras, quelled the divine disasters, and ended the war with Delverne along with it. The acceptance of negotiations with Vinicio has also opened the door, however small, to working out the Kingdom's civil conflict... though it remains a deeply contentious issue that Silvan has made clear he is not willing to compromise on.
Additional Info
Silvan fights best with swords and is skilled at a variety of them. He collects them as well, with his favourites often being the work of Valski blacksmiths.
He owns a pegasus and an eagriff, tending to ride the former for political occasions and latter for military ones.
He very much wants his daughters to inherit a strong, safe Kingdom devoid of wars – unlike the mess he was handed.
He is deeply fond of Valsk and has strong connections, mostly via the military, to the north continent.
