Personality
Pleasant | Enigmatic | Possessive | Ambitious | Friendly | Manipulative
Tor'ang is ambitious, and has a keen business sense. With a pleasant disposition and a welcoming, friendly demeanor she makes most people feel at ease around her. She rules Song-Lu with a velvet glove rather than an iron fist, and never fails to show interest if one of her subjects approaches her with an issue. Those who don't know her would describe her as a benevolent leader, perhaps a bit on the naïve side. This is what she wants. Underneath the traits she chooses to put on display lies a calculating and manipulative mind constantly analyzing what goes on, and a strong will to have things her way. She's good at compromising and will allow others to convince her to change her mind if it serves her higher purpose.
She enjoys manipulating others, playing on their desires or fears, but as a consequence she also has a hard time allowing anyone to see her true self, since her feelings could easily be turned against her. She finds it hard to trust anyone, and even though she hides it well she is often lonely.
History
Tor'ang was born in Song-Lu, child of a local Peacekeeper and a dark elf woman who had visited the city and fallen in love with the inquisitive man. The child was an unintended, but welcomed, consequence of a long and tumultous courtship. Rather than return home and suffer the indignity of giving birth to a half-elf in her beloved Reluir, Tor'ang's mother remained in Song-Lu and found work as an enforcer. Tor'ang had a happy childhood, loved by her parents and facing little prejudice despite her heritage.
Things were not to last, though. Tor'ang's grandmother learned of the child's existence. One night her mother did not return home, nor did she return the next day. Tor'ang's father, the Peacekeeper, investigated this disappearance thoroughly with his colleagues, only to come at a dreadful conclusion. He never told the child what he found when he followed the evidence, instead choosing the easier path of lies, claiming her mother had abandoned them and gone back to her home.
Tor'ang believed this for years, outraged and horrified by the inexplicable loss, until she one day found out the truth. Vowing never to be manipulated again, she moved to Koben and enrolled as a student of administration and enchanting. Spending years developing her skills, she became well versed in courtly manners, and this is where she met her life's obsession; Artur Roenach, at the time Heir to the Empire. Several years later she would serve him as Chancellor of Song-Lu, after he personally recommended her to the old Emperor for the position.
She met another man in Koben as well, a Bratkovan noble with dreams and aspirations and a romantic flair who would proclaim his love for her through song. She fell hopelessly in love, and married him soon after. They lived together in Koben for four years, adding first a boy, then a girl to their family while she continued her education. Things were going well, when the rumors began to circulate that the old Chancellor in Song-Lu was on his last leg. An opportunity she would have leapt at, if she and Silas weren't thinking of moving to Bratkowice. A few months after the rumors began they attended a court event, socializing with the nobility of Koben and making pleasant conversation when Silas suddenly suffered a fatal heart attack, collapsing dead to the floor. Distraught, Tor'ang found comfort in Artur's arms, powerless to save the man she loved.
It was Artur who encouraged her to keep going, who consoled her and helped her deal with her grief. She recovered, her devotion to the Emperor's heir blossoming fully in the absence of a husband to distract her. When Artur recommended her for the position of Chancellor, she was not only devotedly loyal to him, but she was also among the most highly qualified candidates. She was awarded the position, moving to Song-Lu and taking the necessary steps to secure her control of the city.
Ever since becoming Chancellor, she has been running Song-Lu efficiently, reinforcing the thin veneer of neutrality surrounding the city while supporting the Empire. Having fostered her children out to encourage them to learn more of the world, her house became quiet. With the death of Artur's son while under her jurisdiction, she fell into disfavor. It was a difficult time, made more so by the reported deaths of Karmenie Valence and Bracken. Though the latter turned out to have been shipwrecked, appearing on her doorstep some time later to her great, yet short-lived relief. With war having broken out he was unhappy and restless, and left for his beloved North as soon as he was able. Picking up the pieces and setting the Peacekeepers into action, Tor'ang held on to her outward appearance of control, all the while working to regain her position in the Emperor's good graces. It became impossible to remain neutral after the death of the Crown Prince, causing her and the Council to turn their sights towards Koben in earnest.
