Personality
Mellow and easygoing with a perpetual smile on his face, Lyon takes life as it comes, one day at a time. He takes joy in the little things, from getting up early to watch the sun rise to having leftover dessert to save for another day. A pacifist at heart he'll be the first to step in between a fight, taking even a few punches with a laugh if that'll settle things peacefully between the parties. However, this conflict-averse nature belies an incredibly cunning mind, and Lyon will be the first to admit that he enjoys playing politics and society a bit too much-- as long as there aren't any consequences or actual responsibility, of course. He does have a set of morals and greatly values his family and friends, but he is no lionhearted knight; he recognises injustices, certainly, but will never be the first to try and do something about it unless it directly affects those around him.
Lyon is no leader, and has little desire for such a life. His years travelling instilled in him a desire for freedom and lack of structure, and though he performs his current responsibilities willingly and with aplomb he has no intentions of doing it forever. Lyon is confident and assured in who he is and what he does, easily laughing at himself after an embarrassing mishap. His own personal pride does not hold much weight, and he cares little for others' opinions of him, but is nonetheless protective of those he loves. He always pulls through when it counts, able to analyse a problem from all sides to find the best solution.
An unashamed flirt, he seems to be constantly on the lookout for a date, both for himself and any friends who might be unfortunate enough to be both single and near him at the same time. Those who know the significance of the ring he wears worry about the implications of this sort of behaviour, but it doesn't seem as though anyone has had the heart to speak up. Lyon is always willing to lend an ear, but less eager to open up himself. He says little of his own feelings, masking them under smiles and schemes, and even those closest to him can have a hard time figuring out what he's thinking.
History
Born to an old family in Amedra, Lyon grew up in a household defined by honour, prestige, and military excellence. Though he was hardly lacking in talent, Lyon found himself shrinking away from the natural ability of his mother and older sister, the latter hailed as a prodigy who practically had her name on a spot in the Royal Guard before she even entered the military. Feeling pressured despite the genuine love and support of his family, matters were made worse by his father's sudden death in an accident when he was fourteen. With his mother usually gone serving in the capital and his sister now off in the flight regiment herself, Lyon became the only one left at home, with all eyes on him. What was he going to do next? Would he live up to the family name? How was he going to serve as the now-man of the house? The pressure built and built, and Lyon became more and more withdrawn.
The breaking point came shortly before Lyon's eighteenth birthday. His uncle on his father's side died, and none of his children were yet old enough to take over the family's jewel business. Concerned about how things were going to go, Lyon's older sister ended up taking leave from the military to return to Amedra and manage the business. Though he understands that she did it out of concern of overwhelming him, he nonetheless felt a sinking inferiority as, yet again, his sister outshined him. Feeling pressured and useless Lyon packed his things and stole away in the middle of the night. Over the next few weeks Lyon wandered around Miras aimlessly before finding himself off the continent entirely, standing at an Estraude port after getting on the wrong ship. Confused and disoriented, he was thankfully picked up by a troupe of travelling performers who took him in, giving him a meal and a job to pay for the rest. Though at first he simply followed them around doing whatever needed to be done, it wasn't long before they were pulling at him to join them in their performances. They were a mismatched band from all over the world, with no affiliations to any formal guilds, and though Lyon was initially hesitant and awkward it didn't take long before their carefree spirit and joie de vivre pulled him out of his shell and he was smiling genuinely for the first time in years.
Lyon's true personality came out the more he travelled with the group. He did well in the performances, became popular with the crowds, and for the first time he understood that it wasn't that he had no shine, but that his family simply shone so much that he was never able to see his own. By the time the group found themselves in Amedra a year later Lyon was completely changed. Though he tried to avoid his family, he nonetheless ran into them only to find out that they were happy, so happy to see him enjoying life like this. Hearing his mother say herself that she was proud of him, Lyon was overcome with emotion and renewed desire to live, and soon after got down and proposed to the troupe's lead dancer, Youri. The following two years were absolute bliss, as the troupe, rather taken with his family, made regular trips back to Amedra with the newly-married couple.
An ill-timed trip shattered this dreamlike existence. While on a ship to Cantor, many of the passengers were struck with disease, an infectious strain carried on board from the forests of Estraude. Most of the troupe fell ill, and several passed. When the passengers were finally allowed off the ship Lyon disembarked with Youri’s lifeless body, the light gone from his face. His friends and family worried for him, and his sister urged that he return home to recover but he turned her down, choosing instead to continue travelling with the troupe; he had to go on with life, after all, and he couldn't do it sitting in misery at home. Fueled by anger at himself for being helpless as Youri lay dying he changed paths. At the time a summoner he dropped it all to start all over again as a healer, determined to keep this from ever happening again. It seems to have been the right choice, as now, two years later, he genuinely seems to be back to his old self, though he speaks of Youri to no one outside the troupe.
Some time after Koben's initial attack on Amedra, Lyon left the troupe to help with things at home, now that his mother and sister were otherwise occupied. He helped take care of daily matters, welcoming refugees into the family estate as he waited for war's end. However, the king's sudden passing landed him in a role he never thought he'd have: heir and successor. Lyon knew he was more than capable of the job, but he was also very aware that he was a civilian trying to lead a military family; he had to prove himself, and prove he did when he carefully threw the family's support behind the Corsairs. His gamble a success, the decision was made for him to go ahead and take over the family formally as head of house. He's taken well to his (insistingly, temporary) position, making quick and calculated decisions that have earned him growing respect among his peers. Since the civil split, he has very openly supported Prince Vinicio and the East Miras Kingdom while making some deals of his own behind the scenes.
Current Story
Lyon led the family through all the tumult and chaos of the split and beyond, doing what he could to maintain some semblance of normalcy as the world literally split apart. Through it all, he watched his sister become someone she was not, but as much as it pained him to see he knew that it was not a path he could-- or should-- force her off. All he could do was weave a safety net should she fall.
The return of Sunan and Trevol brought news of his mother's fate, news that Lyon did not take well. He had been a young child when Nor left for Miras, and he spent much of his life without his mother by her side. To see her brought down by the very throne she chose over her own children-- it was almost too much to bear.
As his sister did, Lyon threw himself into his work, making a name for himself in high society despite a lifetime avoiding the spotlight. It was with stiff upper lip that he saw his sister off on her mission with only faith in her and the friends they still had in the West to bring her back safe.
Now, news has arrived of his sister's arrest...
