Ana's constantly business-like manner gives her an air of both elegance and unfriendliness. She is efficient and to-the-point with everything she  does, from work to socialising, and has little tolerance for wasted time. Needless to say, she is much better as a colleague than a companion. In social settings, she is disheartening at best - humour and small talk are nonexistent with her and silences uncomfortably tense. When set on a task, however, she is trustworthy, responsible and unyielding, with a firm adherence to her principles. She has a good eye for the bigger picture and, for better or worse, doesn't flinch away from any collateral damage she deems necessary. In this way, she is both  very dependable and very cold. While such stoicism can be useful, it can also be destructive, as she too easily dismisses weaker or more sentimental arguments and can fail to account for irrational but no less real factors. Ana is definitely someone to seek for results rather than support - and results that are materially and morally fulfilling rather than emotionally.

Her iciness at least comes from an abundance of feeling rather than a lack of it. She has thought extensively about questions of morality and priorities throughout her life - and continues to - and has thus forged stances that are hard to shake. She is ultimately committed to the well-being and safety of those around her and is so steely in her decision-making because she knows what she is fighting for. There are those who nurture and those who are wise, and she admires what they do - but she isn't one of them. Instead, Ana stands guard and protects, and she is content with this role.

History

Ana's childhood was marked by an unstable, sickly mother and devoted but overworked father. While both parents did love their children, they ultimately did little to raise them and caring for the household fell on their eldest child, Bríghid, instead. The forced responsibility sat poorly with Bríghid's anxious disposition, however, and she often ended up neglecting Ana and their youngest sister Sadbh. After years of disorganised upbringing, Ana stepped up to help look after the family. It should have been a relief for Bríghid but Ana's brusque attitude - partly natural and partly born from frustration at Bríghid's poor handling - only worsened her feelings of inadequacy, and she and Ana never really got along.

All three sisters were quick to find work once they were able to, in order to take the burden off their father. Getting out of the house and away from their gloomy mother did them all good as well - Bríghid and Sadbh blossomed under the attentions of friends, while Ana found mentors, pets and inspirations. Around this  time, a late addition came to their family in the form of a brother, Éimhín, but the vast age gap and jealous ministrations of their mother - who seemed to be trying to prove she could parent now - kept them from seeing him much. Ana worked first at a silk farm, then a library. She consumed history and crime books as a hobby, and considered being a  historian or hunter before setting her sights higher - she wanted to punish crimes and bring justice herself. She began to study law and combat seriously and then, in a spur of determination, approached a retired judge she admired to ask them to tutor her. She was turned down twice but tested on her third try, and ended up being referred to an old student of theirs for tutelage.

Becoming a judge of the Red Court, Iadlain's judicial body, was a long road but Ana was prepared for it. She remained disciplined and driven throughout the years of heavy studying, training, tests and apprenticeships, and learned to curb the angrier and over-controlling parts of herself. By her 30s, she was fully qualified. During this time, Iadlain's leadership changed hands and she began to receive small, curious visits from the new Count, Cassair. Having been warned by her mother all her life not to get involved with the Ó Faoláin main family, and generally unwelcoming of social interaction anyway, Ana was frosty with him. Unperturbed, he asked her for advice on various legal matters with surprising openness. For the sake of those who would be affected by his decisions, Ana gave him sincere answers, and later noticed him putting her words into practice. Soon enough, it became a routine for him to seek and receive help from her, and he became an unwanted regular at her place. In this way, Ana also became part of Cassair's Grey Coven - not for him, but for others.

Cassair seemed to favour her lack of true interest in him and politics though, and often - to her aggravation - he would leave her the authority to oversee Iadlain while he was abroad. Outwardly, it was a natural enough move due to their blood relation and Ana's occupation, but Ana made no secret of her displeasure in this. While she did want to protect Iadlain and would do a job properly if given it, she had no desire to actually govern. She came to be known as a very competent but very sour second-in-command.

Current Story

When Cassair was deposed, Ana was content to give up her role as a Grey Witch and return to a simpler life as a judge, but simple was the last thing the world seemed to want. The suspicious nature of Cassair's disappearance, the disconcerting actions of the new Count Tomaltach, and the sudden decimation of Iadlain by forest monsters finally galvanised the entire Red Court to move, and Ana was the most sensible choice to take the helm. Her own personal wishes now thrown to the wayside, Ana has fully taken up the mantle of Iadlain's leadership along with the rest of the Red Court, in order to save what remains of their home.

Additional Info
  • Ana's elemental specialty is water. She focuses on precision and intensity rather than scale, and is proficient at slicing things with small amounts of high pressure water. She uses pearls and sea glass as her magical foci and a stylised halberd for her staff.

  • Being a peripheral fighter class, Ana is quite fit for a mage. She has good coordination and spatial awareness, and is a strong swimmer.

  • She wears gloves and clothes of lightning-resistant silk when on duty.

  • She is happily unmarried and lives with a lot of pet spiders. She really likes spiders.

  • The Red Court is the third and last division of Iadlain's lawkeeping system, after the White Witch (the Count/ess) and Grey Coven. It runs independently of politics and is the most widespread and routine of the three. It consists of Red Judges who study and enforce Iadlain's laws, and Red Jurors (also called Watchers or Sentinels) who monitor, support and hold the judges accountable. Together in teams, they handle the majority of conflicts and legal cases within Iadlain, thus freeing the Count/ess and Coven for more high-profile or secretive work. The Red Court is the closest thing Iadlain has to a city guard.

  • Although they are ranked the lowest among the three divisions, the Red Court has the authority to overrule Iadlain's leadership should they move as a majority. This is extremely rare but with recent cataclysms, they have exercised this power.

Relations

Relations

Bríghid ó Faoláin

Older sister. Bríghid's nervous and flaky personality never fit well with Ana's and Ana still can't bring herself to respect her. They grew  distant after Bríghid's marriage and are both better off that way.

Sadbh ó Faoláin

Younger sister. Sadbh remained a quiet, hardworking sort and Ana is  amenable to both her and her wife April. She is truthfully very happy for their peaceful lives, but generally stays out of their way.

Éimhín ó Faoláin

Younger brother. Ana doesn't know much about him and, after observing his selfish and clingy attitude, she doesn't want to.

Cassair ó Faoláin

Cousin and former leader. Ana held no fondness for him and his unpredictable ways, but she respected the power and audacity behind his actions and appreciated his willingness to listen to her advice.

Felix Riese

Business associate. Ana deals with Koben via Felix, when acting as Iadlain's secondary leader. She can't take any of his humour but respects how well he understands - and survives - Iadlish society.

Rowan Haide

Friend. As a healer, Rowan was an important witness in many cases and the two grew increasingly helpful to each other. Ana appreciates their honesty and impartiality, and ability to relax in even her presence.
