- Proud | Irascible | Stubborn | Forceful | Impulsive | Self-Serving

Sociable, friendly and always glad to be in company, Logan is a pleasant man to be around and oftentimes the life of the party. He treats people with genuine amicability and makes for an attentive listener and helpful confidant – as long as the issue at hand can be observed from an outsider's perspective or tangents him but superficially. Caught up with juggling multiple responsibilities for most of his adulthood, Logan hasn't spent much time in his own head in a long while and struggles being in touch with his emotions. This has led to a short fuse when his temper is tested and him being interpreted as superficial and a little daft even by those close to him.

Beneath his easygoing charisma lies a core of pride—pride in his family, his career, and his nation. This pride sometimes blinds him to the need for compromise or vulnerability and he can be reluctant to admit mistakes or ask for help. Having been brought up as a first-born heir and having served in the military for most of his life, he has a deep sense of honor and duty, often putting the needs of his house and the Empire above his own personal desires. He likes taking matters into his own hands and assumes responsibility where it's needed - even if the decision is a difficult one to make or could lead to far-reaching consequences. His unshakeable belief in himself and his judgement ensures that he never wavers in the face of adversity, inspiring confidence in others.

Logan’s impulsive quickness to act is a double-edged sword, however—he often takes risks others might deem reckless, but it is this very quality that has led him to some of his greatest victories. Forceful in his leadership, Logan has little patience for hesitation or fickleness. This decisiveness is both an asset and a flaw; he can push others too hard and judge them by his standards, sometimes creating unnecessary friction with those around him. Logan’s self-serving streak is subtle, but when it comes to protecting the reputation and future of those he holds dear, he doesn't shrink back from taking bold actions, bending the rules or applying violence.

History

Family History:

As a rather old and very traditional household, the Dohertys have been governing their spacious though desolate piece of land called Einöd for centuries. Due to the rarity of their visits to the court and eccentricity running as a primary family trait, the intellectual and magically adept family was regarded with equal parts of respect and gossip among other nobles. A tragedy occurred in the last generation when Laertes Doherty, the intended heir of the Burgraf title, broke down under the expectations set on him and committed suicide, though not before leaving his relatives with an enormous amount of betting debts that seriously endangered the family’s finances. His younger sister Cordelia was then married off to a wealthy, though title-less factory owner from Koben in order to secure their financial position – a move that also helped to improve the stale-growing economy of Einöd.

Personal History:

Logan was born the elder of two sons to the Doherty Family, an old and land-rich Burgraviate overlooking the Sarl river in the west of Koben. While he didn't possess the magical talent or intellectual brilliance his family was known for, Logan displayed valuable qualities his relatives were rumored to lack: a robust constitution, a pleasant and inviting demeanor, and a warm sense of humor.

Since early childhood, Logan had been prepared to someday inherit the title of Burgraf carried by his maternal grandfather at the time of Logan's birth. While he never objected and applied himself well, Logan didn't excel at theoretical studies and his focus began to drift in particular during puberty. As he was drawn away by more enticing activities such as hunting, balls, duels, and the company of girls, he started neglecting his studies despite his parents' best efforts to reign him in. Eventually, they decided upon sending him to Amalia Crown Academy in the capital, hoping it would straighten him out. While the academy did install some discipline, it also sparked Logan's interest in the military, planting the seed for his desire to join the Koben Army when he came of age.

By the time he enlisted, Logan was a proficient duellist and accustomed to following orders and it wasn’t long before he rose through the ranks over his nine years of service. But then, misfortune struck. His father fell ill and passed away within months, leaving his mother devastated. Just a year later, Logan's grandfather, the current holder of their noble title, was on his deathbed. Unwilling to entrust the title to his deeply grieving daughter, he urged Logan to take his place as the next in line, as always intended.

And so, Logan dutifully left military life to assume his responsibilities as Burgraf at the age of 28, suppressing his own grief and confusing feelings about leaving behind a life he had become so proficient at. At record speed, he became engaged to an old childhood friend from a neighbouring noble family, married her and within a year saw to the birth of a pair of twins to secure his line. Despite the brevity of the courtship, the union was a happy and fulfilling one, while becoming a father helped Logan mature and come to the conclusion that his fast approach had been a success.

As political tensions between Miras and Koben cooled with ongoing peace talks, Logan believed his military days entirely behind him—until the assassination of the crown prince shook the Empire. Shortly after, a royal command arrived, summoning him back to service. Leaving the management of their lands in his wife's capable hands, Logan returned to Koben City to rejoin the armed forces.

Current Story

Since the start of Koben's military involvement with the North, Logan had been stationed in Valsk, only occasionally returning for home leave when the occupational situation allowed it. When the North was reclaimed, he led his company in defense of the city walls until the siege ended in favor of the Miran forces. Logan was seriously injured in the wake of the massacre that followed, but as a high-ranking officer taken as a prisoner of war and nursed back to health in captivity.

Humiliating conditions and frequent interrogations marked his time in prison camp, but even worse was facing his own pain, anger, and remorse at having sacrificed so much life futilely, and the harrowing realisation that he might live and yet never see his family again. Salvation came abruptly and unexpectedly in the glamoured form of Sergei, a Northern scientist initially infiltrating the prison to save another captive. Their escape was conveniently covered by the sudden appearance of a cinden dragon escaping his enclosure, and though the group parted ways soon after, Logan was now free.

What followed were harrowing weeks of tramping through Miras and Amedra incognito, ever anxious to be recaptured before seeking out his younger brother Lir in Amedra's capital. Through Lir's contacts and help, Logan was able to return back home mere weeks before a prisoner exchange took place and would have officially allowed him to return to Koben. Though he has been granted plenty of time to recover from his odyssey, his initial spark and zest for life have noticeably dulled. He's sworn allegiance to the new Empress less out of conviction than to secure his family and station and with worry observed the cataclysmic events descending upon the world. For the first time in his life, he feels powerless and out of his depth. The worst of it all might have passed for now, but a question remains: How is a mere man supposed to protect what is dear to him from divine caprice if it struck close by?

Additional Info
  • Wittwensteg Castle, the main estate of the family, stands overlooking a side arm of the Sarl river.

  • Einöd’s economy mainly consists of fishing, herb cultivation and peat mining.  Due to the damp climate and ground unsuitable for farming, the population is sparse and settlements far in-between. The peat is, however, rumoured to have amazing health and beauty benefits and thus cosmetics prepared from it sell well to vain upper-class dames and gents in the capital.

  • Logan is an incessantly proud father, frequently showing around pictures and bragging about his children Cosette & Caius. While his military obligations have kept him away as of recent, he adores spending time with them and considers the two his greatest accomplishments.

  • As previous title-holders have neglected presenting themselves at court any more often than it was necessary, Logan has been keen on renewing ties and becoming more engaged in high-society life ever since his succession. The family thus used to spend the winter months at Wittwensteg Castle while returning to the capital for summer and the social season.

  • Logan is proficient with many a weapon, enjoys collecting them and trying out new ones. Close combat is his preferred method, as he considers firearms 'impersonal'. On the battlefield, he can usually be seen wielding an oversized bastard sword.

Relations

Relations

Balthazar Siegel

A young noble Logan has known since the former’s early infancy and had ever so often played with. They met a good decade later in the military and due to the fond shared memories, Logan was excessively lenient with the youth’s shenanigans under his command. Ever since he had married and settled down, Logan felt Balthazar’s respect and interest for him waning – a fact he is saddened by.

Ludovika Siegel

Balthazar's newlywed wife. Logan had high hopes for their union and its positive effect on Balthazar initially, and was disappointed upon hearing rumors of their estrangement. He feels sorry for the girl and makes an effort to check up on her whenever he can drop by for a cup of tea.

Martin Marienkäfer

A young soldier with whose mother Logan had a rather awkward encounter in his own youth. He is sympathetic towards Martin’s tragic background and wishes to see him prosper.

Lir Doherty

Logan's younger brother by ten years. Their relationship has been painfully strained since the death of their father and Logan's subsequent succession. Where Logan was close to disowning Lir once, time apart did do them well and so did Lir's efforts to bring his brother back home after Logan fled prison. As of recent, he's been welcomed back into the household and currently serves as a magic tutor to his niece and nephew.
