Ludovika is a striking figure at first glance—her stern expression, piercing eyes, and statuesque build give her an intimidating presence. Yet, once she speaks, her true, more delicate nature emerges. Despite her sharp mind and strong, well-formed opinions, she struggles to express them. A fear of judgment and rejection often keeps her silent, and she tends to nod along to please others. Deeply self-conscious, she carries the weight of feeling she has little intrinsic worth.

A naturally perceptive and gentle person, Ludovika has developed an uncanny ability to read people. She notices even the smallest changes in behavior or emotion, often to the point of overanalyzing situations. Her sensitive "compass" can lead her to draw incorrect—and often negative—conclusions. Dutiful by nature and quick to assume responsibility, she is prone to blaming herself for interpersonal issues, even when she may not be at fault.

Her sensitivity to others' feelings and her caring nature make her nurturing, even motherly, toward those close to her. She is especially drawn to people who seem to lack such influences in their lives, offering them the warmth she once so deeply craved herself. Always eager to please, she is focused on fulfilling what is expected of her and strives to excel at it - frequently to the detriment of herself.

Since childhood, Ludovika has harbored a soft, romantic streak. Growing up without a mother, her adolescence offered few opportunities to explore her femininity, so she escaped into daydreams, imagining herself as an exiled princess awaiting rescue and a better life. Her love of reading fiction has endured from those years, and she remains an unabashed romantic when it comes to matters of the heart.

History

Ludovika was born of the union between a renowned Bratkovan knight and the third daughter of a Kobener Earl. Their marriage was one of love, and although her mother’s family disapproved of their youngest daughter's choice, they let her go. Being far down the line of inheritance, her mother Rosamund had more freedom regarding her future than her older siblings. The family made their home in the knight’s childhood residence—a stud farm located on the border between Bratkowice and Koben. The knight retired from military life to be with his family and breed horses, as his own family had traditionally done. However, their happiness was short-lived. When Ludovika was only five, her mother passed away.

Though she barely remembered her mother, Ludovika spent a happy childhood with her father. Yet she always yearned for a motherly figure to help her explore the more feminine side of her nature. Her wish seemed to be granted when her father, having recovered from the loss, married again—a young commoner from a neighboring village. At fifteen, Ludovika enjoyed a gentle relationship with her new stepmother, but as a half-sibling was born barely a year later, Ludovika began to retreat. Two more children followed, and as Ludovika grew older, she felt increasingly out of place in her own family. This wasn’t due to any poor relationship with her stepmother or siblings—it was simply the feeling of being the last remnant of a life long gone, one that could never fully belong to the new, happy family that had formed around her father. She considered quietly leaving, even exploring a military career—the path her father had always hoped she would take—but in the end, she couldn't bring herself to commit.

Years later, Ludovika received an unexpected letter. A great aunt from her mother’s side wrote to announce her visit to discuss important matters in person. Her father was vehemently against it, knowing that his late wife’s relatives had never truly supported their marriage and had shown little interest in Ludovika's life. Nonetheless, he welcomed the visitor with reluctant hospitality. When they met, Ludovika’s great aunt explained that her grandfather had passed away, leaving his title to his two eldest children. The younger of the two had eloped with a servant, while the older had succumbed to a riding injury. As a result, the title had passed to Ludovika's great aunt, who now sought an heir. She had no children of her own and proposed to 'adopt' Ludovika as her own. To prepare for this, Ludovika would need to move to Koben and undergo extensive lessons to ready her for life at court.

Her father vehemently opposed the idea, but Ludovika found herself increasingly intrigued by the prospect. The future her great aunt offered seemed dazzling, straight out of a fairytale - and for once in her life, fully centered around Ludovika. Her family would also benefit from her departure, as her half-siblings would enjoy their father's full inheritance and an overall more comfortable life. Despite her father’s protests, Ludovika ultimately agreed to the proposal, leaving Bratkowice behind for Koben. Two years have passed since then. After months of catching up on etiquette and court manners, Ludovika has finally been introduced to the ton. However, rumors spread quickly, and many disapprove of her—a near-commoner and foreigner—as the heir to such an important title.

Current Story

Her new life as heiress and debutante was a short, if dazzling concatenation of parties, courtesy calls, opera visits and dinner parties. Unbeknownst to herself, she had been made the target of marriage plots on the part of the Siegels, an Earldom bordering her aunt's estate. In their eldest son Balthazar, she found an unlikely companion and yet everything she admired in a young man: Beauty, chivalry, gentleness of character, and a shared love for many things she also enjoyed. Ludovika was dumbfounded, then deeply flattered to see her interest returned and being picked out of the masses by such a desirable bachelor. Her depricating self-image allowed for but one conclusion: He must be in love with her, for reasons she couldn't understand, but learn to appreciate. As they spent increasingly more time together, Ludovika gradually, yet very deeply fell in love with him and all her dreams became reality when he proposed.

Though her aunt warned her about Balthazar's rumored flakiness of character, Ludovika gladly accepted and married him within the circle of family and friends soon after. It wasn't long before she found herself pregnant - news the young couple was elated by. Ludovika watched her husband with pride as he became politically involved and stood up to the challenges he had feared before, yet she felt lonely. The more Balthazar involved himself with the crown, the less time he spent in her company. The building issue seemed temporarily resolved upon the birth of their son Caleb yet soon became much worse following the usurpment of the royal family and the crown prince's suicide. Though she had known them to be close, Ludovika was shocked that her husband maimed himself just to escape presenting at the new Koben court. His abandonment of her and their son in favor of mourning the prince has scarred her deeply and she became painfully aware of how wrong she must have been in her assessment of his feelings for her. Depressed and ashamed, she's sharing the load of Balthazar's responsibilities with her brother-in-law Lars, yet avoids society where she can, unable to handle the rumours and pitying eyes of the public.

Additional Info
  • Has a charming soprano singing voice, initially honed in traditional Bratibran singing. She's taken formal lessons since her arrival in Koben and is a much sought after dinner party guest for her impromptu performances in the parlour afterwards.

  • Ludovika’s paternal family was quite famous for the horses they bred, which are known as strong, durable and faithful creatures. Due to growing up on horseback, Ludovika is a formidable rider and values the animals greatly.

  • Helenenstein is a comparatively small, if wealthy earldom by the Bratkovan border, famous for its exquisite wine and plentiful fruit harvest.

  • Having helped raise her multitude of half-siblings, Ludovika is well-versed in child rearing and genuinely enjoys being around children and caring for them.

  • She very much enjoys dressing up and fashion, something she could not fully live out in the environment she grew up in. Despite that, Ludovika is self-conscious of her looks and age and fears that she is unequal to the younger, well-bred noble girls.

  • Has a very fashionable, if conceited, lady's maid who enjoys doing her up in ways Ludovika considers daring if not at times vulgar. She trusts her judgement though and has received looks of admiration and envy among the ton in equal measures.

  • Currently wears mourning jewelry and colours in commemoration for the past Empress and her son.

Relations

Relations

Balthazar Siegel

Husband. Her one true love - or so she thought. Their recent estrangement has popped her bubble of thinking of him as her perfect  'prince charming' and has falsely confirmed her subconscious impression of being unlovable and undesirable. She's staying out of his way as he's decided to go through whatever he is going through by himself and is deeply hurt that he won't entrust himself to her. Despite her bitterness, she genuinely misses his presence and companionship.

Adele Roenach

Benefactress and friend. Some time after her introduction to court, Ludovika was offered the position of junior lady-in-waiting by Adele. She genuinely enjoyed attending her and valued the Empress' advice and affection for her greatly. She is deeply saddened to have lost such an important figure in her life to a comatose state and misses her dearly.

Lars Siegel

Brother-in-law. Ludovika has taken to the taciturn young man upon entering the Siegel family and has done her best to encourage him in his endeavors and be a warm, caring presence in his life. She doesn't understand her husband's gripe with him and for her efforts was rewarded with Lars's loyalty and support in handling politics and their household while Balthazar is away.

Gabrielle Siegel

Sister in law. Ludovika adores Gabrielle and is greatly involved in preparing her for her soon-to-be debut. She is supportive in her strive to be a nurse and healer, finding her dedication to the cause admirable.

Logan Sigmund Doherty

A friend of her husband's from his military days. She is glad for his occasional company and thankful for his welcoming conduct towards her, yet her high regard for the man mixes with fear as she knows of his military involvement and senses the crueler tinges to his character. Her deep respect for him forbids her from addressing him informally, despite his wishes.
