Ves is a gregarious and outgoing sort who can walk into a room and bring the energy up tenfold. Loud, playful, and energetic, she finds it easy to connect with strangers and make fast friends. She is curious and interested in the lives of others, and will find someone new to swap stories with everywhere she goes.
Her experiences in the military showed her that violence is a tool to be used sparingly and only as a shield, as it always hurts more than intended. She has always been a generous sort, but Ves helps the needy and feeds the hungry now whenever she can. Not only is she constantly haunted by the desire to make up for the damage she helped wrought, but she believes in a simple life mantra: you today, me tomorrow. Community is the cornerstone of society, and it's up to everyone to support each other when times are tough.
She is most comfortable with other common folk; she received only the most basic education provided in Bratkowice, and her distaste for political double-speak leads to a direct, simple, and sometimes tactless approach to conversation. If you have a grievance with her, you'd best lay it out plainly or be prepared to settle it in an arm wrestling match. Though not unwilling to listen, she is headstrong, self-reliant, and once her mind is set, it would take moving a mountain to change it. This leads to her holding long grudges, but fortunately, she is easy going enough to make it difficult to reach that point.
History
Ves grew up in the Kovok Steppes in a semi-migratory clan who followed the grazing fields for their livestock. Her father was a smith who engineered a traveling forge so that he could shoe horses and repair tools for the clan. Ves spent a lot of her time acting as his apprentice and eventually became quite skilled.
When Ves came of age, she went to serve in the military of the Bannate as required. She took to it more than expected, falling in love with the wide array of people she got to meet from all over Bratkowice, and the joy of being given a higher purpose.
Before she knew it decades passed, and trouble was brewing in the Bannate. Neighbors tested the strength of the borders as the Bankomt grew elderly, and his sudden death and succession by twins threw the land into disarray. Brigands ran rampant with the army stretched thin and neighbors pushing the borders more aggressively. With no one to quell them, beasts harried the villages on the fringes.
Though they had been named to rule together, the twins’ disagreements quickly soured into a struggle for power, and the Bannate fractured between two camps-- those who supported tradition despite Dragan’s weaker presence, and those who favored the younger Jelena as a better leader in the face of the turmoil. Ves favored Jelena, seeing the need for a strong and decisive Bankomtessa.
Early 8284 saw a series of clashes between the two sides, resulting in an aggressive push from Jelena into the castle, capturing Dragan. She quickly took control, but the damage had been done. While the siblings squabbled, the Bannate suffered from the plague of bandits. Crops were failing, markets disrupted, and the populace under threat. The Serdar marched on the Bannate, forcing Jelena to surrender.
For the chaos they caused, the twins and their closest supporters were executed, while the lower-ranking officers managed to escape with exile. Ves set off alone, the cause she had devoted herself to turned to ash in the wind. As she travelled out of the Bannate, she saw the effects the conflict had wrought. She had pledged to make her Bannate safe, and all they had accomplished was misery and destruction.
She settled in Song-Lu city where she met a family who were much friendlier to outsiders than she was used to. She did hard and honest labor for them and for many folks in their neighborhood, and in return they taught her everything they knew about cooking. It became a way for her to keep her hands busy, and to forge connections with new people. Ves soon built her own food cart and served free meals to anyone who asked. She even attracted the attention of a Sunling, who she calls Senka. She also became close friends with Hyeon, a half dark elf close to her in age.
In late 8291, her new life was threatened for the first time by war. The corsairs struck while she was visiting the wet markets, and she fought to let civilians escape. The violence was swift and vicious, but it left her with new determination to protect her newfound home.
War again threatened Song-Lu when the Kingdom attacked the city. Ves was caught unawares at her food cart, but still did whatever she could in desperate defence of the city. She fought a dragon with a kitchen knife, suffering terrible burns in the process. She would have lost her life if not for the intervention of Nina and Hyeon. The adabrene poison claimed many casualties among the people she knew and loved, and Hyeon was severely injured. It took months for them to recover from their injuries.
But soon the Molvahain went haywire and began swallowing her old home. Despite her exile, Ves couldn’t stand by and watch-- so when many abandoned Bratkowice for the Citadel, she fought the forest back. Though her efforts barely made an impact, she was able to give townsfolk time to flee. When the forest was finally brought to heel, she was brought before the Serdar for breaking her exile. But for her valor, she was instead granted clemency. Now welcome back home, Ves was torn-- should she stay and continue giving back to Bratkowice, or return to protect her newfound home in Song-Lu?
Ves’ uncertainty was short-lived with the rising of the gods. Seeing no other way to stem the calamity, Ves returned to Song-Lu to help search for Huozai’s shards with Hyeon. They managed to secure one in Hyeon’s distant relative’s family shrine, returning to the palace just in time for the awakening. With the explosion of fire, Ves watched Hyeon walk into the flames in a daze before being dragged to safety. There was no time to grieve, however, as Song-Lu was engulfed in fire as terrifying weiwu rampaged. Ves fought to exhaustion, evacuating who she could and stemming the tide of death.
In the midst of the destruction, madness overtook the city. Senka harried Ves and her friends, leading them to the edge of the city before the madness overtook them. Ves joined volunteers to dive back in to search for people to rescue-- and it was during one of these search parties that she encountered Hyeon, wreathed in flame and alive, but enthralled. Now an Apostle of Huozai, she sought to drag Ves back into the madness. Narrowly escaping, the search and defense of the border remained desperate until the intervention of the Three. With the barrier in place, they no longer fear the madness expanding….but also could not rescue anyone else.
Feeling useless and defeated, Ves traveled to Koben with the rest of the Songluan refugees. There she helped build Peony Village, and mustered all of her resources to feed the refugees food from home. Once everyone was settled, Ves found herself again feeling restless. So she packed up her cart and traveled back to Bratkowice, both to provide food to those in need and to beat back the Molvahain.
Current Story
The calamities of the Gods have diminished the ache of her previous sins, replaced now with new trauma and grief. But with the end of the world came also stronger bonds with the people around her, and its banishing brought forth a love of life worth celebrating. Feeling now as if she was given a second chance, Ves intends to make full use of life post-apocalypse to bring peace and good food to all she can.
