Regenfest

27 Sep - 10 Oct 2015

Every year as the Month of Rains begins, the bustle of Koben channels into a dearly loved holiday - Regenfest, a street festival where Kobeners of all walks come together to mingle and, for at least one week, embrace spontaneity. Although this year's celebrations have been scaled down, the city is still steeped with celebratory spirit from the highest circles to the lowest.

Giant tents with long benches and plentiful beer form an arena for all to mix; it is said that if you haven't shared a drink with a stranger on Regenfest, you haven't celebrated it properly. Stalls with games, food and souvenirs line the decked streets. Musicians and performers gather to entertain the swelling crowds, often creating impromptu street parties that flow and ebb throughout the week. Where they can, celebrants don traditional clothes such as dirndls and lederhosen.

Ever wary of the vulnerabilities in such a celebration in these times, the military comes to the aid of the civilian guard. Extra patrols staffed by local army personnel and Imperial Guards (in areas frequented by nobles) are ready in case of emergency, though they try to be as unobtrusive as possible. The week is, after all, for celebration and come shift change, many take the opportunity to participate themselves.
