Silver Tide Festival
14 Feb - 28 Feb 2015
Every year, as winter starts to turn towards spring, Song-Lu’s fishermen begin looking to the sea. Boats dare the late-winter storms to range north and east of the volcanic isles, searching for the silver tide which signals the return of the salmon to their rivers of origin, as well as the return of various other species of fish to grazing and hunting grounds near the shore.
In the city of Song-Lu, the announcement of this return sparks a festival which typically lasts for a full week. Buildings and streets are decorated with fish-shaped lanterns, people wear fish-patterned fabrics to show their appreciation, and fish-based dishes are served everywhere. Small children are often dressed in fish costumes, while adults tend to dress more conservatively. Fireworks and illusion displays cover the night sky at midnight on the last day of the festival.
Features: Fish lanterns, fish-patterned fabrics, fish costumes for children, fish banners, fishing poles, sushi, fish soup, various exotic fish dishes.
Colours: Silver, yellow, red.
