Personality

Charming // Anxious // Generous // Fatherly // Cheeky // Faint-Hearted // Flowery

Marcus holds an air of charisma and is skilled at presenting himself favourably to others. Often his approach is seen as flirty or forward, but there is a genuine goodwill behind it. Some might find him insensitive or inappropriate for this same reason as he isn’t very good at speaking plainly and from the heart on a whim. He often cracks a joke or innuendo to push certain people’s buttons or in more serious situations, as a way to cope.

While not all of his confidence is faked, when things get tough, he’s more flight than fight. However the courage of others has slowly inspired him to invoke some of his own and he is slowly learning to hold his own.

He is charitable and finds joy in the results of helping others, through deeds and money. His fear that greed will take over his life again also contributes to his choice to live humbly, and would prioritise maintaining relationships over other outcomes.

As his time as a father grows, he has become more doting of younger people. Having gone down a bad path in his youth he wants to give them the positive influence he wished he had back then. He tries to maintain an air of youth to be “in with the kids” but honestly he’s likely to be outstaying that welcome in a few more years.

History

The courtship of Marcus’ parents was always described to him like a fairytale romance. Love at first sight, when a light elf spotted a human woman on the docks of Amedra. He was their perfect little son, and they lived humbly as a fisher family by the sea.

Playing with the neighbourhood kids, they would often daydream of loftier things, lives of luxury and adventure. It was all fairly childish, and they all slowly grew older and onto their own dreams and careers.

For him, it was about plants. Teas and salves had captured his imagination, and soon he wanted to learn about healing magic too, after showing some promise for it. In his excitement to find further training in the art, what started as a home tutor arrangement turned into a bolder plan to move to Miras and study at the Academy of the Arcane. His parents were understandably upset as Marcus had arranged this without their knowledge, but as his father feared burning bridges with his son by refusing him, they let him go.

He flourished at the Academy, writing periodically to his parents to keep them abreast of his progress. Even as a student Marcus was already starting to embrace the big city life that he had always dreamed of, and was keen to live lavishly after he completed his studies. Local clinic work was humble-paying and nowhere near what he wanted, so he dug around to see what other opportunities there were.

In time, his charisma got him cozy with a drug manufacturing ring that sold to pockets of high society, and all synthesisers would get a cut. Since it was all for a recreational crowd it didn’t weigh on his conscience much, and it funded his hedonistic lifestyle to boot. A win-win. However, it wasn’t long until his actual workplace learned of the reputation he’d developed behind closed doors, and promptly dropped him from the clinic. If anything it just freed Marcus up to continue what he was doing.

With the ring’s success came an expansion of clientele, and soon it wasn’t just the rich coming to them anymore. Seeing one too many people who could genuinely no longer help themselves made Marcus rethink the kind of path he had chosen, and he was disgusted with himself. It was also inevitable that he would be caught eventually, and he hit a point where he couldn’t keep up or maintain the masks he’d created. Before he could dig himself any deeper, he left.

His clinic wouldn’t take him back, and surely his parents would have heard by now what happened to him. They hadn’t written to him in so long. He was too much of a coward to go back to Amedra, so he went south to Cantor instead.

He talked little about himself when he arrived, old habits telling him to play the cool, mysterious stranger and so he did, at first. It felt liberating to be finally among strangers, since he no longer had to be calculative about how he talked or acted.

He happened to be the only healer on site when a group of kids had been ushered into the chapel after having foolishly kicked a hornet’s nest. Marcus surprised everyone by helping the kids out on the spot, and it wasn’t until the situation calmed down that he realised it was the first time he had healed anyone since he left Miras. Alongside their thanks, the act of helping felt… warm, like it used to.

He was offered the opportunity to stay around the Abbey to help more if he wished, a few days later. He didn’t hesitate to say yes. He has since started a family with his wife and young son, still volunteering his services as an oblate.

Current Story

The whirlwind of war brought many people to Cantor, and he stepped up like he always did. The death of Tharoneos brought its own problems with it, but still he persisted. He couldn’t afford to be half-hearted anymore. He was no longer a young man, and he was now a father, a figure someone could look up to. It was time to grow up.

He latched onto family and friends in the midst of the chaos, offering succor and his expertise to what he could control, and prayers to what he couldn’t. When his home was ravaged in flames, he held others closer, and it came time to shed that rabbit heart.

The elk begs for its rebirth, and with trembling hands he steps into the unknown. The godchild breaks open the very firmament of Delverne, and he now has to live with being the cause of suffering, and that some things will forever be out of his hands.

Additional Info
  • Has an extremely high tolerance for alcohol, but doesn’t drink much anymore after becoming an oblate.

  • His work with the Abbey involved open free classes for children in the healing arts and medicine. He ran adult classes too but not as frequently. Now that things are in upheaval, he runs them as needed.

  • Skilled and trained in making herbal teas and medicines with his own stock. These mostly aren’t powerful medicines but he is able to write prescriptions for people to shop at proper apothecaries. He is looking to invest in more and more complicated concoctions, given current circumstances.

  • While he doesn’t technically sell medicine, it’s become common practice for those who receive his concoctions to pay him back in meals and produce.

  • A plant buff. He was very engrossed with researching the new plant life emerging from the Leywood and is looking forward to getting his hands on Nisalvini’s newly emergent flora.

  • He has one dimple on his left cheek and consciously smiles in a way that favours that side.

  • Tries to be hip and young despite his status as a father and his age. In a few years he will be the awkward dad trying to relate to his son meme.

  • The extent of Marcus’ contact with his Delvan relatives starts and ends with a visit to the city when he was a toddler. Now that he is older he has concluded his father was disowned, even if he can’t get him to confirm it personally.

  • His full name is actually Marcus Luis Caminante-Allaine, but just goes by Marcus Allan since it’s simpler for people to remember (and spell).  Also don’t want to disrupt meta just bc I’m adding Lore™.

Relations

Relations

Daniel Arkmenetide

A long-time friend? nuisancee? and acted as one of his chaperones back when Daniel needed eyes while around town. He never misses a chance to tease him or prod his prudish side. With bigger things on the horizon, he sees Daniel has a lot on his plate and worries for him.

Ryanna Geist

A now young lady who had a kid crush on him. He always thought it was cute of her and won’t let her live it down. Now that they are both older and more mature, he finds it a privilege to see her thrive despite everything that’s happened.

Kamon Intira

His self-nominated adopted mother away from home. She has been a great encouragement on many fronts, from supporting him as a father to his more recent goals in the healing arts. They share meals and conversation together often and he is grateful to have such loving company around.

Leo Binici

A kid who got trapped underground with the other Cantish. For his age he has such fire, and Marcus has warmed up to him like a dad. Perhaps a little bit of the young half-elf’s courage rubbed off on him too.

Atticus Leland
