Waking Spirits
20 May - 9 Jun 2018
A new people has emerged in Alva. From trees, lakes, mountain, ocean, sky and everything in between, what appear to be spirits of nature emerge from a mysterious silver mist. At first they are dormant. Some are fully formed and simply dreaming, but many others are only half-emerged - still fused to the trees or rocks that they came from - and it's uncertain if they're really alive. In the days and weeks that follow, those who are whole begin to stir.
The first word uttered by many is one repeated , 'oriad', and from this they are named the oriads. They seem to have no language or memories, save for what happens from the moment they awake. Some are unfriendly and retreat into the wilderness, but many more are wide-eyed and curious. Many are 'adopted' into homes to teach them their way of life - and they learn well. Fears about them erode.
As they learn language and living, things begin to return to them - little skills remembered in a new context, or small affinities for innocuous things. They may not remember anything and so be unable to act on it, but the puzzle of what or who they are still hovers with a hint of promise.
